Carole Anne Boone and Ted Bundy

Carole was the wife of one of America’s most infamous serial killers; Ted Bundy.

Carole met Ted Bundy while she was going through her second divorce. Ted expressed a desire to date her but Carole refused at first in favor of a platonic friendship she began to cherish dearly. “I guess I was closer to him than other people at the agency.” Carole Said. “I liked Ted immediately. We hit it off well.”

At that time, Carole was unknown to Ted’s killing behavior. “He struck me as a rather shy person with a lot more going on under the surface than what was on the surface,” Carole explained. “He certainly was more dignified and restrained than the more certifiable types around the office. He would participate in the silliness parkway. But remember, he was a Republican.”

In 1975, Ted was arrested in Utah when police found pantyhose, a ski mask, handcuffs, an ice pick and a crowbar in his iconographic Volkswagen Beetle. He was convicted of the kidnap and assault of a 12-year-old girl.

However, his relationship slowly grew stronger. They exchanged letters and she visited the state for seven days to see him. Two years later, Ted was extradited to Colorado to finish his 15-year sentence. With the help of money smuggled in by Carole, he concocted an impressive prison escape and fled to Florida. At Florida, he committed the two most significant acts on his criminal record; the murder of Chi Omega sorority girls Margaret Bowman and Lisa Levy, and the kidnapping and murder of 12-year-old Kimberly Leach.

Carole moved to Florida to attend the trial.

During his second trial in 1979, Carole and Ted Bundy had grown very close and many believe that she had helped him in his second escape from prison. They steadily exchanged letters and Carole even relocated to Florida with her son to be close to Bundy.

Carole served as Ted’s character witness multiple times during his trials and Ted Bundy was part of his own defense team, having studied law in the past. In 1980, Carole told Ted that she wanted to get married and he subsequently petitioned the prison, stating his desire to marry her but the jail authorities denied the request.

However, Ted Bundy decided to use an obscure law in the legal books of Florida and on 9 February 1980, during the trial for murdering Kimberly Leach, when Carole had been called to the witness stand, he asked her if she would marry him. Carole accepted and as it occurred in front of the presiding judge, they were legally married. A day later, Ted Bundy was given the death sentence (for the third time) by electrocution.

Carole Anne Boone Daughter | Rosa Bundy

In October 1982, Carole gave birth to their daughter and she named her Rose or Rosa Bundy. There were speculations on whether Rose was Ted Bundy’s daughter and if she is, how she was conceived. Even though conjugal visits were prohibited at Raiford Prison where Bundy was kept, the inmates were known to bribe the guards for private time with their female visitors.

Carole would often visit Ted Bundy taking Rose with her and in 1986, Ted was designated to death watch which forbade any physical contact between him and his family. Although Carole threw tantrums for not being allowed to visit her husband, she stopped visiting him all the same.
