Assamad Nash,  25  years of a young man from New York was arrested after a terrifying murder of an Asian woman at a vigil Monday morning in Manhattan’s Chinatown.

He was arrested on murder and burglary charges. It was unclear whether he had a lawyer who could comment on the charges.

Officials such as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams condemned Lee’s death as the latest in a series of unprovoked attacks on people of Asian descent.

Assamad Nash is a black man and reportedly homeless from New York, according to ABC 7. However, the details of his ethnicity are not being made public at the moment because they may cause a schism between two different ethnic groups.

On the other hand, the victim was Asian, which has already sparked outrage on social media as an anti-Asian hate crime. However, New York City Mayor Eric Adams issued a statement on Sunday.

He wrote, “I and New Yorkers across the city mourn for the innocent woman murdered in her home last night in Chinatown. We stand with our Asian brothers and sisters today.”

According to officials familiar with the case, Nash had five prior felonies and three pending court cases on various issues. He is thought to have most recently resided at The Bowery’s homeless shelter.

He was arrested at least three times in the last year on misdemeanor charges ranging from assault to harassment to illegal MetroCard use. However, in all three incidents, Nash was released without bail.

Nash was taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation before being returned to the 5th precinct, where he is expected to be charged later today.

On January 6, 2022, he was arrested for allegedly damaging 27 MetroCard machines at Herald Square, Penn Station, and Second Avenue in a spree that began on December 8.

Nash was scheduled to appear in court on March 3 to face charges in those incidents.

Assamad Nash is reported to follow a woman, Christine Lee up six flights of stairs before sneaking into her Chinatown apartment.

According to police, Nash, 25, entered her apartment, grabbed a knife from the kitchen, and stabbed her multiple times.  Lee was returning home after she was dropped off at her building on the 100 block of Chrystie Street and had no idea she was being followed.

The moment was captured on surveillance video.

Just after 4 a.m. on Sunday, Lee’s scream pierces through the building. Two young women living across the hall dialed 911, and officers arrived within minutes.

The door was barricaded when they arrived. Personnel from the Emergency Services Unit had to break down the steel door in order to find Lee’s body in her bathroom.

According to three law enforcement sources, officers apprehended the suspect, Nash, right at the scene. He was covered in blood after allegedly stabbing Lee several times.

Her website suggests that Lee was “a New York-based creative producer working in national-scale marketing content. She has previously served for select names like Google, Twix, Equinox, TOMS, Cole Haan, and ALDO.
