Sophie Jeffreys Roger Scruton
Sophie Jeffreys is married Roger Scruton who was an English philosopher and writer who specialized in aesthetics and political philosophy, particularly in the furtherance of traditionalist conservative views. Scruton wrote over 50 books on philosophy, art, music, politics, literature, culture, sexuality, and religion; he also wrote novels and two operas.
Roger’s most notable publications include The Meaning of Conservatism (1980), Sexual Desire (1986), The Aesthetics of Music (1997), and How to Be a Conservative (2014). He was a regular contributor to the popular media, including The Times, The Spectator, and the New Statesman. He embraced conservatism after witnessing the May 1968 student protests in France.
He was a lecturer and professor of aesthetics at Birkbeck College from 1971 to 1992, London, after which he held several part-time academic positions, including in the United States. He helped to establish underground academic networks in Soviet-controlled Eastern Europe in the 1980s, he was then awarded the Czech Republic’s Medal of Merit (First Class) by President Václav Havel in 1998.
In the 2016 Scruton was knighted on Birthday Honours for “services to philosophy, teaching, and public education”. Roger as an academic, journalist and writer he has been a lightning rod for criticism and abuse from the left. While he has a reputation as a first-class professional philosopher among other academics of all political persuasions, he has regularly been shouted down in universities and prevented from speaking.
Scruton books have been unmercifully slaughtered by reviewers and his pronouncements on the entire mocked society. He was accused of being a grammar-school boy in the thrall of the upper classes: One observer said The fact is he used to go for fox-hunting and wearing Enoch Powell’s old hunting clothes the jacket split and on the first time he used it was for many others is all a bit like Charles Ryder in Brideshead.
I do ask myself why I make people so enraged because I only ever say what I think. And while I know it might not be everyone’s point of view, that doesn’t seem particularly intolerable to me. His efforts was to do this over and over for the next three decades which made him one of the most contentious figures in British public life.
Roger’s latest book, England: It Elegy tried to show England as a reflected ideal on its own, he says. I know ideals aren’t realities, but they do influence reality social, legal, political, cultural. The reception shows the change in mood. Of course, he gets his share of sneering reviews but there is a recognition of his breadth, reference, scholarship and eventually, he wins the less grudging support from some surprising quarters.
In his new book, he claims that England died about the time he was at university. From his father, he got a pessimism about the fate of rural England and had a melancholy sense that western civilization was doomed. But like anyone who was brought up on Leavis, he had a tremendous belief in English culture and literature.
I never thought there was an alternative to what we had inherited. You either learn to inherit it properly or you become disinherited. I always thought the oriental faction the hashish-smoking people with ponytails and dreamy eyes – were escapists. They hadn’t found an alternative but were just deceiving themselves.”

Scruton’s father was a left-wing working-class Mancunian who became a teacher. He hated the upper class and loved the English countryside. His mother, Beryl Claris always called Johnny as a genteel figure who read romantic fiction and, entertained blue-rinsed ladies who appeared miraculously almost as soon as he [father] was out the door.
He and his two sisters were brought up in Buckinghamshire, in Marlow and High Wycombe, and he remembers, “a sort of Lawrentian class-tension between my parents. There were terrible rows which frightened the children.
My father went through a very depressing period partly through not getting anywhere with his career but also something deeper about the time I was entering puberty. Life at home wasn’t very good and I had really left by the time I was 16 and didn’t go back until after Cambridge when I went to look after my mother when she was dying.”

Roger Scruton Death
In July 2019 Scruton realized that he had cancer, and he underwent treatment, including chemotherapy. He finally died on 12 January 2020 at the age of 75. And on the following day, Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted: “We have lost the greatest modern conservative thinker who not only had the guts to say but thought beautifully.”
Chancellor Exchequer Sajid Javid pointed out Scruton’s work behind the Iron Curtain: From his support for freedom fighters in Eastern Europe to his intellectual immense contribution and to his conservatism in the West, he made a unique contribution to public life. The Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan called him “the greatest conservative of all times”, adding: “The country lost a towering and a loving intellect friend.
Some of his friends like Robert Jenrick, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, said that his work on building more beautifully, submitting a more recent department, that will proceed and stand in some unusual part of a rich legacy.
The scholar and former politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali described Roger as a “dear and generous friend, who freely sought out the advice and wisdom, that he expected in little return”. His friends and colleague, Douglas Murray, paid tribute to Scruton’s personal kindness, by calling him one of the kindest, most encouraging, thoughtful, and generous people you could ever have known.
