ESPN’s Adam Schefter has one regret about Greg Hardy interview: Saying he ‘changed’

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has been widely criticized for an interview in which he allowed NFL free agent Greg Hardy to paint a favorable picture of his 2014 domestic violence incident, but Schefter said he regrets only a comment he made after the interview and not the substance of the conversation itself.

On Tuesday, the network’s NFL reporter told “The Dan Patrick Show” after his chat with Hardy that he believes the player, currently a free agent who is drawing little interest, has “changed,” following a controversial 2015 season with the Dallas Cowboys.

“I went in there with the idea that everybody had, that this guy’s a monster, okay? I went in there thinking that this is one of the scariest people in the NFL,” he told Patrick of his “exclusive” sit-down with Hardy in Mississippi. “And I came out of there with a very different feeling about him. I came out of there with a feeling that this is a guy who has managed to say the wrong things at the wrong times, has not always made the right decisions.

“But I found him to be a changed kind of guy, a guy that I think realizes he did make a mistake, could have handled things differently in regards to that incident. It’s such a tough thing. I’d like to talk to more people before I made a judgment. All I can go by is what he said. I’ll say this; he wasn’t wavering, he was adamant, ‘I never touched this woman.’ ”

Schefter walked back those comments Wednesday during a discussion on WEEI’s “Dennis and Callahan Show.”

“Well, look, we’ve all seen the persona of Greg Hardy on the sidelines and in games,” the reporter said. “That’s what I expected. Okay, I should have been more precise in how I described it. That was a mistake on my part. I regret not making that more clear. But I’ve got no regrets about the interview or the questions we asked — we went at him. And, again, to me, that was the situation as it went down. I should’ve been more clear, and I wasn’t.”

In the interview with Schefter, Hardy — who was accused of a domestic incident that allegedly involved guns and threatening an ex-girlfriend, with photos of her bruised body later surfacing online — maintained that he was not convicted and Schefter let him off the hook when Hardy said, “I’ve been proven not guilty.” However, Hardy was found guilty in the summer of 2014 by a judge in North Carolina and his punishment was set aside when he appealed for a trial by jury. The victim, Nicole Holder, failed to appear at trial and reportedly reached a settlement with Hardy, ending the legal matter.
